AISD Trustees Invite Input on Southwest Middle School Boundaries, Configuration

January 14, 2009 - The Austin School District Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, January 20, to discuss proposed boundaries and a proposed alternative grade configuration for the new Southwest Middle School, currently under construction at 7412 Slaughter Lane.

Citizens Communication will be held beginning at 7 p.m. Citizens may sign up to speak from 7:45 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. in Room A-250 of the Carruth Administration Center; and from 4:45 until 7 p.m. in the Board Auditorium, B-100. Sixty speakers will be heard, at 1-1/2 minutes each.

Opening in August 2009, the new school will relieve overcrowding at Bailey and Small middle schools; and proposed changes would affect Bailey, Small, Covington, and Paredes middle schools. Maps of proposed school boundaries are available for viewing at the meetings and on the AISD website,
www.austinisd.org.

Also under review is a one-year proposal to open the school in 2009-2010 as an intermediate center for grades five and six, relieving overcrowding at several area elementary schools until a new elementary opens in 2010. As proposed, the Southwest Middle School would convert to a traditional grades 6-8 model in 2010.

Trustees are scheduled to make decisions about the school boundaries, grade configuration, and school name on Monday, January 26.

Carnival needs Eggshells!
by Heather Sendera

Our Spring Carnival sells LOTS of confetti eggs! We need eggs! Please remember to crack your eggs leaving approximately 2/3 of the eggshell intact. The eggshell should then be washed thoroughly and returned to their original container. All eggshells can be turned in to your child’s classroom. For anyone not familiar with the process, these clean, dry eggshells will then be filled with confetti and the hole in the top covered with tissue paper...hand them to a child and use your imagination…they are VERY popular with the kids! We need 100’s of eggs so any donation is appreciated. If you do not bake or do not wish to save your shells, you are more than welcome to donate pre-made Cascarones!

If you have any questions or comments please contact Heather Sendera or Vali Martin.

Thank you in advance for your participation and assistance. Mark your calendars for Friday, March 6. It should be a fantastic carnival!
