Peer Buddy Program Opening Now Available
by Ms. Schattenberg, OHE Faculty

A new program, called the Peer Buddy Program, was started this school year at Oak Hill Elementary School.  The program is designed for typically developing three/four year olds to provide peer models or "buddies" for three/four year old children who are receiving special education services in the public school setting.  Peer models have the opportunity to be leaders, be helpers, make new friends, and participate in activities such as art, music, physical skill building, group learning and story time with a certified teacher and teacher assistant.  They also learn basic school routines.  Children selected to be a peer model attend school from 7:45 to 10:45 AM, Monday through Friday.  The program has been developed to ensure appropriate peer role models for our students with needs in the areas of speech/language, listening, and social and behavior; therefore, we do not charge a monthly fee.  For more information about the program, and/or an application form, please contact Ms. Lauri Schattenberg, Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities Teacher, at 841-7847.  Currently, there is an immediate opening for a peer buddy.  Early plans for next school year can also be made.

60's Day at OHE!
by Melinda Cantu, Mother of a OHE 1st grader

Friday February 6, 2009 was the Oak Hill Elementary Student Council Spirit Day - 60"s day. What fun it was to see so many children and teachers dressed up for the day. I don't think I have seen so much tie dye "flower power" since the Austin Reggae Festival. What a great way to begin discussions about how important the 1960's were in this country. As we headed off to school, all dressed up, I asked my first grader what he thought was important about the 60's. He thought for a moment and said " well... Dr. Martin Luther King had a dream in the 60's". I was very impressed and asked how he knew that, he told me how he remembered it from school when they talked about Dr. MartinLuther King. I decided to take the moment to talk about the Civil Rights movement and the importance of it. I was so happy to be able to talk about something that I feel had a monumental impact on our world and how far our country has come - and I have to say my little boy looked very handsome in his love beads and glasses. As I left the school that morning, I remember what my son said as I walked out of his classroom. Holding up a peace sign he said "Peace Brother. "Boy.......weren't the 60's great?

First Graders Hold a Food Drive to Celebrate 100th Day of School
by Ileana Abounader

On February 5th Oak Hill students and teachers celebrated the 100th day of the 2008-2009 school year. This is a tradition that goes back many years at Oak Hill, a milestone that teachers typically use it to nail down various math concepts related to the number 100.

This year the first graders, led by Mrs. Calabrese started a new tradition for the 100th day – collecting 100 cans of food per class for the Capital Area Food Bank. Mrs. Calabrese described the event as follows:

"I got the idea because I was inspired by President Obama's call to Americans to participate in service to others during these difficult times. I also saw an article about how charitable contributions to organizations such as food banks are low at this time. I thought we could bring in 100 cans of food as a way of counting to 100, adding, and sorting in a meaningful way. The kids were very motivated to count and add cans each day and calculate how far we were from our goal. They also understood that they were doing something to help others."

Seven first grade classes participated in the food drive including Faulkner, Dillon, Mendrek, Hamelwright, Calabrese, Roberts, and Hernandez. All told they collected 716 cans of food – 16 cans over their goal! Way to go first graders and kudos to Mrs. Calabrese for coming up with such a grand way of celebrating the 100th Day.

Also for the 100th day, Mrs. Atkinson's second graders contributed, counted, and shared snacks in 10's to emphasize that 10 x 10 = 100. They used marshmallows and toothpicks in sets of 100 to build structures tinker toy style and the students had 100-piece puzzle races!

Mrs. Demos' kindergarten class pulled down 100 streamers, popped 100 balloons, had a special 100th Day snack, and made 100 day sunglasses, necklaces and hats. They also did things like jumping 100 times, staying quiet for 100 seconds, and taking 100 steps.
