Art News!
The Oak Hill Art Department will be
selling their t-shirts, aprons and tote bags, from Feb,22-26th. The money helps with the
supplies for all the students at Oak Hill. Please find a display of sizes
and samples in the front hall of the main building. The forms should have come home last week. Just fill out the form and return
it and your money back to Mrs. Garrick, art teacher in the main building. Thank you
in advance for supporting the Oak Hill Art Department.
Do You Skip Breakfast?
Today in the
United States
more and more children skip breakfast. About 90% of 1 to 5 year-olds eat
breakfast. By the time they are teenagers, only 14% eat breakfast.
Remember, if
you skip breakfast so will your kids. Join the CATCH Program – be a CATCH MVP.
Teach your kids to begin each day with a healthy breakfast. Get them off to a healthy start that can last
a lifetime.
Try some of
these quick and easy breakfast foods to get a great start to every day.
-
Ready-to-eat whole-grain cereal with skim or
low-fat milk. Top it with chopped fresh fruit.
-
Whole wheat toast with peanut butter or low-fat
cheese. Add a serving of fresh fruit such as mangoes, strawberries or papaya,
or 100% fruit juice.
-
Low-fat yogurt with low-fat granola or dried
fruit and nuts.
-
Toasted whole wheat waffle topped with fresh
fruit and yogurt.
BOX TOPS = FREE MONEY FOR OHE!

Please put ink cartridges in plastic bags before dropping them off at school. Let us recycle your used printer cartridges to raise money for our school. Drop-off boxes located in both buildings by the office.

In the coming weeks, be on the lookout for descriptions of each position and committee that we currently have and possibly even some new ones we'd like to have next year.
WE NEED YOUR HELP.
The success of our PTA lies with the parent and teacher volunteers that we have. We can do so much if we all work together. Many of us are extremely busy with our children, families, work, etc. but we can use all the help we can get no matter how much time you have to give. If you are interested in helping out in anything we do, please send an email to webmaster@ohepta.org.

This is a fantastic fundraiser for the school so please be generous with your donations and/or your time. We will need lots of donated items and LOTS of volunteers! Room parents have been provided with information on what is needed from each class but as a reminder:
- Kinder and 1st grade families are asked to bring pre-bagged desserts. Grab a baggie and throw in 3 or 4 (homemade or store-bought!) goodies. If each child in these grades brings in 10 bags, we will have a great Dessert Booth! **Remember, no peanut products please!
- 2nd and 5th grades are asked to donate 12 oz or 20 oz bottles of soda or juice. You can donate any brand/flavor and cases are wonderful!!
- 3rd graders are responsible for bringing (.5 liter size) bottles of water. Any brand is welcome and cases are great! This gives the kids a great alternative to soda that night!
- 4th graders are asked to supply 3-liter bottles of soda. This stocks our drink tables and is a hit with kids and adults alike…everyone needs a little break from the games periodically!
****All of the above donations can be brought in on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of Carnival week!****
Again, we need your help to make this night a success. The kids are getting excited and now the countdown begins…less than 2 weeks and counting!

Pamela Calabrese Awarded a Junior League of Austin ABC Grant
The Junior League of Austin and its partners, 3M and AMD, recently awarded your teacher, Pamela Calabrese, an Aid for Better Classrooms (ABC) Grant for her project “Circles of Life: Exploring the Life Cycles of Living Things” project. A total of $11,000 was awarded to Central Texas teachers.
The ABC Grants Program was established in 1991 by The Junior League of
Austin to provide supplemental funding for classroom teachers. 3M and
AMD each donated $5,000 in funding again this year to support the
project. To date, over $100,000 has been given to elementary through
high school teachers. These grants, up to $500 each, are given to
creative teachers with innovative classroom projects. Russell Bridges,
Government and Community Affairs Manager for 3M said, “3M is proud to
partner with the Junior League and AMD to encourage and reward
innovative approaches to classroom instruction. These hands on projects
make learning fun for students.” In addition, Karin Dicks, Global Programs
Specialist with AMD said, “AMD is proud to partner with 3M and the Junior
League. We applaud these innovative teachers for their dedication to
successful learning. ABC grants impact several thousand students in
Central Texas each year.”
ABC Grants are awarded based on several criteria which include
originality, enhancement of curriculum, and the real world application of
the project. The Junior League of Austin’s President, Kathi Haralson, said “It
is a privilege to give back to teachers that excite and inspire learning in
the young minds of Austin students”. The 2010 ABC Grant application
process will be beginning this spring, so please check The Junior League of
Austin website for more application information.
Circles of Life: Exploring the Life Cycles of Living Things, Pamela Calabrese,
Oak Hill Elementary. This project will use visual aids, models, literature and
student projects to bring life cycles alive in the classroom, including
opportunities to observe live animals brought to the classroom!
About The Junior League:

to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and
improving the community through the effective action and leadership of

million dollars to the Austin community and its members volunteer
approximately 100,000 hours. For more information about The Junior

First Grade visits the Blanton Art Museum
Oak
Hill students in first grade took a trip to the Blanton Art Museum on
Friday, February 19. Docents lead museum tours and discussions with
the children about symbols found in paintings and how they reflected
the real life interest of the artist. They had children compare
different paintings exposing them to realistic and abstract styles.
Students also identified many different mediums such as wood, glass,
paint, metal and water and they discussed the mood these different
textures brought to exhibits.
The hands down favorite experience for children included an abstract, yet hands-on exhibit How to Build Cathedrals
by Cildo Meireles. Classes entered the exhibit which is surrounded by
a sheer curtain then sat around a floor of 600,000 pennies, overhead
hung a chandelier of 2000 cattle bones. While first graders were
simply appreciating the contrasting textures and scale of this work,
you can learn more about it here.
A special thank you goes to Pam Calabrese for securing a grant to help fund this wonderful field trip.
