Wanted – Kids to Play Games!
Are you interested in an after-school Math Pentathlon Club at OHE?
Yes you read right, your child can learn math while playing games! Math Pentathlon is a program of interactive problem-solving games, supportive curricular instructional activities and assessment tools for ALL students. This motivational program strengthens basic math concepts and skills, aligns with National and State mathematics Standards, and stimulates creative thinking while developing problem-solving skills. In addition to all that, it’s fun! For more information about Math Pentathlon and how it could benefit your child please visit http://www.mathpentath.org/.
This year only eight 1st graders have been able to participate in this wonderful program. I would like to know if there is enough interest to pursue expanding this program school-wide for next year. A few points to consider:
Participants will meet by grade-level once per week after school for about one hour.
Participants will learn five fun and challenging games specifically designed for their age division (Kinder/1st, 2nd/3rd, and 4th/5th).
There will be a nominal fee of about $35 per child to participate. This money will be used to purchase game sets and materials required for the program.
This program requires a high level of parent involvement either as a game coaches or assistants. We will need a minimum of two coaches per grade level and one assistant for every four children in the program. Coaches are responsible for teaching the games and for planning and coordination of the weekly meetings. Assistants attend the weekly meetings and help supervise the games. Depending on the number of volunteers, assistants could rotate from week to week.
An area-wide Math Pentathlon tournament is held in the spring each year. Club members are by no means required to take part in tournament play, but it gives those who wish to participate the opportunity to play all five games against students from other area schools in a supportive and non-threatening environment. Students are grouped both according to grade-level and to previous participation in the program. At the conclusion of competition, ALL students are recognized for their participation in the tournament.
If you are interested in this program or have further questions, please send an email to mailto:ily.abounader@gmail.com with the following information:
- Your name
- Child’s name
- Teacher
- Grade Level
- Male or Female
