Volunteers Needed!!!

Interested in helping out? Want to learn more about your child's school? Want to meet some cool people while making a difference in your child's life? Contact Jodi Picardat for more information on volunteering at our school. There are several committee positions open and many committees just need volunteers to get the job done!

Kindergarten Playdates!

Do you have a child starting kindergarten this fall? If so, drop by the Kindergarten Playground Playdates at the Oak Hill Elementary kindergarten playground and meet some other families with children starting kindergarten. A PTA volunteer will be at each playdate to answer any questions you have. This is a great opportunity to make new friends before school starts! It is OK to bring older siblings. (Please note that there is not access to bathroom facilities during the playdates because the school buildings are locked.) Contact Lisa Moe at lisa_moe@austin.rr.com or Karen Mauldin at karenmauldin@austin.rr.com if you need more information. Special thanks to Karen and Lisa for coordinating these playdates for incoming kindergarteners on behalf of the PTA Welcoming Committee!

Attention kindergarten parents: SAVE THE DATE for the Boo Hoo Breakfast! “Jump” Into Reading!!!

Help your child retain what they have learned this past school year by keeping them reading over the summer break.  You can download the form needed to keep track of which books your child has read from our website over the summer.  All forms must be turned in by noon on September 1st in order for your student to participate in the “jump.”   Those students entering 1st & 2nd grades will need to read at least 10 grade level appropriate books (parent help is okay); those entering 3rd & 4th grades will need to read 5 chapter books that have at least 125 pages each; those entering 5th grade will need to read 5 chapter books that have at least 250 pages each.  If you have any questions, please contact Valarie Spake at vbspake@sbcglobal.net.  Have a great summer!  And keep our OHE Eagles reading!!!

OHE Reading Rangers - Needs You!!!

The OHE Reading Ranger program is being revived and we need YOU to make it a success. Reading Rangers will commit 2 hours of their time one day a week to help our first and second graders improve their reading achievement in one on one tutoring sessions. We have already rounded up several enthusiastic volunteers, but we can use as many as would like to help. Please join us for what is sure to be a rewarding experience for us all.

Contact Tawnya Savoy at tsavoy@austin.rr.com to become an official Ranger!

Can't commit to every week? You can join our list of substitute Rangers and fill in when one of the regulars has a conflict.

Update on Southwest Elementary School Boundaries Process

Austin ISD will establish a Southwest Elementary School Boundary Task Force in August. With the opening of a new elementary school in the Meridian subdivision in the fall of 2010, the boundaries of some southwest elementary schools may change. The Task Force will also review underutilization of Boone, Patton, and Sunset Valley Elementary Schools and how these schools might provide relief for overcrowding at Clayton, Kiker, Mills, and Oak Hill. Each of these seven schools listed above will have two representatives on the Task Force.

The Oak Hill Elementary School Boundary includes four areas: 49 (Travis Country area), 149 (Circle Drive area), 249 (Travis Country West area), and 349 (Old Bee Caves Road area). The areas most likely to be affected by boundary changes are those on the fringes of the boundary zone: Area 149 is on the western fringe and Area 49 is on the eastern fringe. (Regardless of any changes made during the Task Force process to the elementary school boundary lines, middle school tracking would not be affected.)

A working group of Oak Hill Elementary parents has begun organizing, planning, and preparing for successful representation on the Boundary Task Force. One aspect of this work is gathering information and feedback about how changes made by the Boundary Task Force could affect our school. Another aspect is coordinating communication with everyone at our school about the boundary process. Most importantly, the working group will serve as a “support system” for Oak Hill Elementary’s two representatives on the Task Force.

It’s up to all of us as a school community to make sure our voices are heard at the AISD level during the Boundary Task Force process. Even if your own neighborhood is not moved to another school, potential changes to our student population will affect everyone at the school.

If you’re interested in participating in the overall working group effort at Oak Hill Elementary or if you have input or questions about the boundary process, please contact Casie Wenmohs at ckw@austin.rr.com or 891-6962. Look for another Eagle Eye update on the boundary process once we have received more details from Austin ISD!
