Partners In Reading Volunteers Needed!
We are working with Austin Partners in Education to implement their Partners in Reading Program in some of our 2nd grade classrooms this year. This program benefits all students in the class no matter their reading level. We are looking for English speaking and bilingual volunteers to spend 45 minutes per week (exact time of day TBD) in the classroom working with a small group of kids. Training will be provided in September and the program will kick off in October. You don't need to be the parent of a 2nd grader to volunteer. We would love to have anyone from the community who is interested. If you or your spouse work nearby and would like to include your work community we would love to explore that possibility with you. If you are interested in this extremely rewarding volunteer opportunity, please contact DeeDee Eastwood at 892-8765 or at meastwood@austin.rr.com.
Principal's Fundraiser needs help!
Every year, the principal has a fundraiser at the start of the year - Magazine sales. This fundraiser helps pay for the salary of our school IT person. This fundraiser is in dire need of help this year - persons are needed to help with the distribution of forms, collecting, counting, sorting of orders, etc. If you are interested in helping out, please contact volunteer@ohepta.org. This fundraiser kicks off the first week of school. Thanks so much for your consideration in helping Mrs. Whistler with this fundraiser!

Contact Casie Wenmohs at 891-6962 or ckw@austin.rr.com for more information.
OHE School Beautification Committee?
by Pam Calabrese, OHE 1st grade teacher
When you take a stroll through the halls of Oak Hill this year, you will notice a splash of color here and there peeking out of formerly solid white, aging walls. Teachers have been getting out the ladders, paint cans and brushes, and putting some new life into our building. You might also notice a comfortable chair, a pretty rug, a lovely plant, and other small comforts that bring a touch of welcoming warmth to the classsroom. We have always known that Oak Hill is filled with wonderful students and their families, and dedicated and caring teachers. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have that "ah, this is a beautiful environment" feeling throughout our building? I would love to get a group together who would be willing to give a little time, effort and talent to beautify the inside of our school. Interested folks can email me at pacalabr@austinisd.org, and we can get started!
Last Kindergarten Playdate:
Do you have a child starting kindergarten this fall? If so, drop by the Kindergarten Playground Playdates at the Oak Hill Elementary kindergarten playground and meet some other families with children starting kindergarten. A PTA volunteer will be at each playdate to answer any questions you have. This is a great opportunity to make new friends before school starts! It is OK to bring older siblings. (Please note that there is not access to bathroom facilities during the playdates because the school buildings are locked.) Contact Lisa Moe at lisa_moe@austin.rr.com or Karen Mauldin at karenmauldin@austin.rr.com if you need more information. Special thanks to Karen and Lisa for coordinating these playdates for incoming kindergarteners on behalf of the PTA Welcoming Committee!

Peer Buddy Program Openings Available
by Ms. Lauri Schattenberg, Preschool Program Teacher
Last year, the Peer Buddy Program was started at Oak Hill Elementary School. This program was such a success that it is being continued for the 2009-10 school year. The Peer Buddy Program is designed for typically developing three/four year olds to provide peer models or "buddies" for three/four year old children who are receiving special education services in the public school setting. Peer models have the opportunity to be leaders, be helpers, make new friends, and participate in activities such as art, music, physical skill building, group learning and story time with a certified teacher and teacher assistant. They also learn basic school routines. Children selected to be a peer model can attend school from 7:45 AM to 10:45 AM or 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The program has been developed to ensure appropriate peer role models for our students with needs in the areas of speech/language, listening, and social and behavior; therefore, no fees are charged. For more information about the program, and/or an application form, please contact Ms. Lauri Schattenberg, Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities Teacher, at lschatte@austinisd.org or by calling 841-7847. Openings are available starting in September.
Volunteers Needed!!!
Interested in helping out? Want to learn more about your child's school? Want to meet some cool people while making a difference in your child's life? Contact Jodi Picardat for more information on volunteering at our school. There are several committee positions open and many committees just need volunteers to get the job done!
Help your child retain what they have learned this past school year by keeping them reading over the summer break. You can download the form needed to keep track of which books your child has read from our website over the summer. All forms must be turned in by noon on September 1st in order for your student to participate in the “jump.” Those students entering 1st & 2nd grades will need to read at least 10 grade level appropriate books (parent help is okay); those entering 3rd & 4th grades will need to read 5 chapter books that have at least 125 pages each; those entering 5th grade will need to read 5 chapter books that have at least 250 pages each. If you have any questions, please contact Valarie Spake at vbspake@sbcglobal.net. Have a great summer! And keep our OHE Eagles reading!!!
OHE Reading Rangers - Needs You!!!
The OHE Reading Ranger program is being revived and we need YOU to make it a success. Reading Rangers will commit 2 hours of their time one day a week to help our first and second graders improve their reading achievement in one on one tutoring sessions. We have already rounded up several enthusiastic volunteers, but we can use as many as would like to help. Please join us for what is sure to be a rewarding experience for us all.
