NEW Driving Laws!!!
Effective 9/1/09
New Laws Passed Regarding Teen Drivers and Child Booster Seat Usage
Parents need to be aware of recent new laws that go into effect September 1 regarding driving and child passenger safety!
HB 339 prohibits teens under 18 from texting or talking on a cell phone while driving.
HB 537 requires that everyone in the car, regardless of age and regardless of where they are sitting, needs to wear a seatbelt.
HB 61 requires that all children younger than 8 years and less than four feet nine inches tall be in a child safety seat system.
Are you a kindergarten or 1st grade parent with
lots of questions, but you’re not sure who to ask? Do you need help maneuvering
around the annex or the main building? Would you love to chat with another
parent who is “in the know” and could help you navigate the new worlds of kindergarten
and 1st grade from a parent’s perspective? If so, you are in luck!
The Welcoming Committee is proud to announce the creation of a “Kindergarten
Mentor” and a “1st Grade Mentor” to informally support you as you
make these important transitions at Oak Hill Elementary with your child. If you
would like to sign up for this voluntary e-mail list, please contact
Lisa Moe, if you are a kindergarten parent or Lindsay Castaneda , if you are a 1st
grade parent. Many thanks to Lisa and Lindsay for taking on these important
volunteer roles!
Kindergarten Annex Grounds and Campus Planters get Spruced Up
In preparation for the Oak Hill Elementary PTA Interest Fair, Meet
the Teacher Night and the first day of school, our campus was
graciously served by the members of Ecclesia Austin. They helped
re-pot planters, rake leaves, sweep sidewalks and water thirsty
plants. A heartfelt thanks goes to Pastor Greg Bobbitt, Suzi Bobbitt,
Samuel Bobbitt, Emilie Bobbitt, Josiah Bobbitt, Stephanie Fitzpatrick,
Matt Fitzpatrick, Sunni Hollums and Nathan & Stephanie Swan (OHE
parents). If your organization is looking for a service project or you
are seeking a way to help our OHE campus, please contact the Grounds
Chair at luci@latimer.com.
Partners In Reading Volunteers Needed!
We are working with
Austin Partners in Education to implement their Partners in Reading
Program in some of our 2nd grade classrooms this year. This program
benefits all students in the class no matter their reading level. We
are looking for English speaking and bilingual volunteers to spend 45
minutes per week (exact time of day TBD) in the classroom working with
a small group of kids. Training will be provided in September and the
program will kick off in October. You don't need to be the parent of a
2nd grader to volunteer. We would love to have anyone from the
community who is interested. If you or your spouse work nearby and
would like to include your work community we would love to explore that
possibility with you. If you are interested in this extremely rewarding
volunteer opportunity, please contact DeeDee Eastwood at 892-8765 or at
meastwood@austin.rr.com.
Math Pentathlon Update
The first meeting of our Math Pentathlon Club (MPC) will be on Tuesday, September 22, from 2:45-4pm.
We will meet weekly on Tuesdays after that. More information regarding the club will be coming via email in the coming weeks.
If
for some reason you have decided not to participate or have any questions, please contact Ily Abounader.

Back to School Night REMINDER

Our 2009-2010 PTA Membership drive will be beginning soon and we want YOU to join the Oak Hill PTA and make a difference in the education, health, and welfare of our children.
By becoming a member, your support helps:
Purchase supplies and equipment not funded by the district
Fund additional teacher training and materials
Provide for various enrichment programs and scholarships for our students
Support grounds improvement and teacher appreciation activities
Provide opportunities for fun family activities such as the Ice Cream Social and Movie Night
As an added bonus, PTA members also receive the following discounts:
La Quinta discount rate
3% off auto insurance from Nationwide Insurance
5% - 10% off Enterprise Rent-A-Car
4 to 6% off Aflac supplemental accident insurance

5% off online purchases at BarnesandNoble.com

Many people wonder if joining the PTA will require more of your time. While you are always invited to attend the PTA meetings and there are many opportunities to volunteer, all of these are optional. Just by joining, you are helping to support an organization that puts our children first.
All are invited and encouraged to join the PTA - teachers, parents, grandparents and older siblings. Please look for information coming home with your child this week. Our PTA Membership Drive will begin September 8th and go through October 2nd.
Help us reach our goal of 100% membership! The first class to reach our 100% goal (at least one membership per family) will celebrate with a special prize and the teacher will receive $25 to spend towards classroom items! So please help your class win and be a part of making a difference.
If you have any questions or would like additional information, please contact:
Cathy Cox at membership@ohepta.org
Workshop Starting this week!
The OHE WORKSHOP will start on Wed. Sept. 9 at 9 AM in the work room and it runs until 12.
Workshop is a dedicated time every week that volunteers gather in
the workroom in the Main building to help out with whatever needs to be
done. Parents assist teachers with jobs such as copying, laminating,
die cutting, etc. This gives the teachers more time to spend on
teaching and planning.
Workshops are on
Wednesdays starting at 9:00 A.M. in the workroom of the Main building.
Any help that we can get would be appreciated. Come when you can!
Introducing OHE Bag Tags...
We have a new, fun, no-work-on-your-part
fundraiser this year being sponsored by a local Austin company. The OHE
PTA is selling customized Bag Tags to help identify your child's lunch box, backpack and sports bag. You get two laminated tags for $10 (2 with the same information on each) and proceeds benefit the OHE PTA.
The
tags have the Oak Hill Elementary Eagle logo on one side and your
child's information on the other. Examples of the tags can be seen on
the bulletin board in the main building or in the annex office.
To order your OHE Bag Tags, simply print and fill out
this form with the information you would like printed on your
tags and turn it in to your child's teacher by September 18th with a check made payable to the OHE PTA. The form will be coming home with your child today!
Teachers
love these tags because it helps them identify the children's
belongings and kids love the tags because they get to show their school
spirit!
Don't delay - turn it in today!
Go Eagles!

Jump into Reading
by Valarie Spake
If you dropped your kids off at school Thursday morning, September 3, you may have seen the two moonwalks out front of the main building. The
moonwalks were for those students who participated in the "Jump into
Reading" summer program. Those who turned in their reading logs were
allowed to leave class and "jump" back into the school year. It was an
awesome reward for a job well done. The students also received a certificate on Friday for their participation in the program. Comments from
the students were, "This was the most fun," and "I'm gonna do this again next year!" Many thanks to the volunteers who came and withstood the heat
to help with this program. Keep reading. It's a reward all in itself!
