OHE Bag Tags - ORDER FORMS due FRIDAY
We have a new, fun, no-work-on-your-part
fundraiser this year being sponsored by a local Austin company. The OHE
PTA is selling customized Bag Tags to help identify your child's lunch box, backpack and sports bag. You get two laminated tags for $10 (2 with the same information on each) and proceeds benefit the OHE PTA.
The
tags have the Oak Hill Elementary Eagle logo on one side and your
child's information on the other. Examples of the tags can be seen on
the bulletin board in the main building or in the annex office.
To order your OHE Bag Tags, simply print and fill out
this form with the information you would like printed on your
tags and turn it in to your child's teacher by September 18th with a check made payable to the OHE PTA. The form will be coming home with your child today!
Teachers
love these tags because it helps them identify the children's
belongings and kids love the tags because they get to show their school
spirit!
Don't delay - turn it in today!
Go Eagles!

Want to help out in Workshop?
Workshop is a dedicated time every week that volunteers gather in
the workroom in the Main building to help out with whatever needs to be
done. Parents assist teachers with jobs such as copying, laminating,
die cutting, etc. This gives the teachers more time to spend on
teaching and planning. Workshops are on
Wednesdays starting at 9:00 A.M. in the workroom of the Main building.
Any help that we can get would be appreciated. Come when you can!

Project Read: Everything You Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask – Part IProject Read is a research based multi-sensory language arts (reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and comprehension) program. Research has proven that all learners retain skills best when using a multi-sensory method of learning, which means using all of your senses to reinforce the skill. The Project Read program was first developed in 1973, and has been used all across the country since that time with great success. It meets all the “No Child Left Behind” standards, and has been an approved AISD program for many years.
As you walk through the halls of Oak Hill, you will see our kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade teachers all incorporating different parts of the program into their language arts lessons. You may see skywriting, felt paper writing, hand-signals for vowel sounds, “finger-spelling” (separating sounds), and a variety of other visual, auditory and tactile teaching methods. Many upper grade teachers have been trained in Project Read Phonology (reading component) and Written Expression (sentence structure and paragraph writing) and are including lessons as well.
Most importantly, there are three benefits from using Project Read that are immediately visible. First, it is both teacher and kid friendly. The students love the hand motions and cues and are actively engaged, and it is a very easy program for teachers to use. Our teachers who have been trained have been extremely excited about Project Read, and have expressed interest in all the different components in addition to Phonology and Written Expression. Second, it provides a spiraling program from grade to grade and thus ensures that our curriculum is aligned. Finally, it helps us to achieve our reading goals as stated in the 2009-2010 Campus Improvement Plan.
The PTA’s support in helping our teachers get trained and purchasing resources for immediate use is invaluable. Your investment has saved teachers from countless hours of preparation, and your generosity is so very much appreciated. Thank you so much for your continued support and helping us to best serve children.
Stay tuned for Part II of Project Read: Everything You Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask for more detailed explanations of individual components of the program, and how you can help at home.
Pat Shotwell
Oak Hill Reading Specialist
FYI- So far, the Oak Hill Projects and Goals Committee has spent a total of $19,607 in order for all grade level teachers to be trained to incorporate Project Read in their classroom as well as for Project Read materials that will be used by all teachers in their classrooms. Teachers are paid a stipend for attending training. Training sessions were held both in Jan/Feb and again this August. Supplies were purchased at the end of the school year in May so all teachers should be fully equipped for using the materials in their classrooms for the current school year. Thank you Ms. Shotwell for coordinating the ordering and distribution of all materials. For more information regarding Projects and Goals, please contact Robin Levatino.

After just one week, we already have a close contest with Mrs. Bentley’s 2nd grade class in the lead at 23% membership. Mrs. Hamelwright’s 1st grade class is a close second at 21% followed by Mrs. Dillon’s 2nd grade class at 19%. So help your class and our school by joining the PTA!!!
