C.A.T.C.H.: What is it??
(Coordinated Approach to Child’s Health)
CATCH is the health program that A.I.S.D. has
adopted for their elementary and middle schools.
The goal of the CATCH program is healthy kids in healthy
schools. CATCH schools
aim for healthy behavior and
positive outcomes in the following areas:
Move and
stay active.
Value
healthy eating.
Practice
healthy habits.
The CATCH Program focuses on coordinating four components:
Physical
Education program, and a Family program. The Coordination of health messages between these four component areas is critical to positively impact
children's knowledge and behavior.
Parents have an important role in the CATCH program!
how you can incorporate strategies to practice healthier
habits
with your family!
Green Apple
Club Kickoff
The Green Apple Club is starting up again at Oak Hill for our second
year.
What’s the Green Apple Club you ask? Well, it’s
a savings program with A+ Federal Credit Union (A+FCU) where
participants can
make
deposits right here at school. It’s a fun and convenient way for
the children of Oak Hill to start saving and learning the important
principles of money management and investment.
We kicked the program off at our Friday assembly with a
visit by the Green Apple Guy. Applications were also sent home
with every child so keep an eye out for it. If one didn't come home,
you can stop by the main
office and pick one up or go by
A+FCU (right next to the Walgreens on William Cannon) to
fill out your application.
And as an added bonus, A+FCU will deposit $10 into each new
account that is opened!!! Now that’s just FREE money!!! If you joined the Green Apple Club last year and
opened an account at A+FCU, then you DO NOT need to complete
another application form.
If you have any questions about the club, please contact
Cathy Cox, Jeanette Powers or Suzanne Baxter at green.apple.club@ohepta.org.
P.E. NEWS
Please send your child to school in tennis/gym shoes on P.E. day.
Students will have Physical Education class every third day. Classroom
teachers willl be handing out an ABC schedule to you to help as a
reminder. If still in doubt which day is P.E., have students wear
tennis shoes every day as they are active at recess and WOW time
anyway, or keep a spare pair in their backpack. Shoes must cover the
entire foot, not be too bulky, not fall off or be slippery on the
bottom. Children may not be able to participate in P.E. class if they
do not wear safe shoes.

Want to help out in Workshop?
Workshop is a dedicated time every week that volunteers gather in
the workroom in the Main building to help out with whatever needs to be
done. Parents assist teachers with jobs such as copying, laminating,
die cutting, etc. This gives the teachers more time to spend on
teaching and planning.
Workshops are on
Wednesdays starting at 9:00 A.M. in the workroom of the Main building.
Any help that we can get would be appreciated. Come when you can!

Become an OAK HILL SPONSOR
The Oak Hill Elementary PTA relies on financial donations from our parents and community to support our school’s programs. Traditionally, we have raised a significant amount of money through gift wrap sales. This year, we are offering you and your children the choice to “opt out” of selling gift wrap, and instead giving you the opportunity to make a contribution directly to the PTA. If you work for a corporation that matches contributions, you can multiply your impact!
Your child probably brought home a flyer on Friday detailing this information or you can click here to view a few suggested contribution levels. If you own or are affiliated with a business or corporation, consider sponsoring at the Sky High Level. Not only will you be helping our school, but your business will receive public recognition through our newsletter and prominent signs at the school. Whether your donation is large or small, every dollar is important!!
Back to School Night
by Kierstan Schwab, OHE Co-Publicity Chair
This week Oak Hill parents had a chance to find out more about what their children would be learning at the annual Back to School nights.
Kindergarten and first grade parents met with teachers on Tuesday night, while third through fifth grade parents attended on Thursday. Mrs. Lagerquist and Nowakowski-Grimm's classes held their own Back-to-School night on Wednesday.
Teachers provided feedback on classroom structure, schedules and daily activities. Parents were informed about discipline strategies as well as academic expectations. Information about annual field trips for each grade was also provided.
If you unable able to attend one of these evening activities, please talk to your child's teacher about what was missed.

We
had a huge week of getting in PTA Membership dues!! We now have a total of 196 PTA members at
OHE. Thanks to all those that have
already joined. To those that haven’t
had a chance yet, you still have time.
The membership drive will continue until Oct. 2nd. We can have another big week especially with
a student population of approximately 1020 children and all the great parents
we have. So keep those dues rolling in!!
Our
Class Competition is heating up with a leader starting to emerge and a BIG
fight for second place. Checkout the
Class Contest board in the main building hallway to see how your class is doing. Below are the top three:
#1 Mrs. Bentley’s 2nd grade class at 64%!!!
#2 We have a 3-way tie at 37% membership between Mrs. Brooks’ 4th grade
class, Mrs. Lagerquist’s 3rd
grade class and Mr. Oberkrom’
Kindergarten class – wow!
#3 Mrs. Robert’s Kindergarten class is a very close second at 36%.
Remember,
the class with the highest percentage of members at the end of the drive or the
first to reach 100% membership will win a special treat for the entire class
AND the teacher will receive $25 to spend towards classroom items!! So help your class and our school and join
the PTA now!!!
If
you’ve misplaced your dues envelope, you can pick up another at the main office
in either the main building or the annex.
Just ask the friendly ladies in the office for PTA Membership
information. Or you can contact Cathy
Cox at membership@ohepta.org.

Spring Carnival
It is never
too early to start thinking about the PTA spring
carnival!
Remember that
our kids benefit directly from the carnival profits. This money is used for classroom
teaching materials, aids, programs and supplies to ensure that our students have
the tools necessary to learn.
Yes, we are
already accepting donations! There are boxes in both the annex and main
building lobbies, clearly marked for carnival donations. Items that we
will need this year include:
Children’s books in excellent/very good
condition
NEW, wrapped, small toys: if you visit a
fast-food establishment and can convince your kids not to open their toys,
please donate them!
Monetary contributions: if you feel the
need to contribute and cannot assist in another way, we will always gladly
accept donations. These funds will
be used to purchase prizes, food, etc for the night of
carnival.
And, last but
definitely not least, our confetti eggs! While baking or making your daily breakfast, please remember to crack
your eggs leaving approximately 2/3 of the eggshell intact. The eggshell should then be washed
thoroughly and returned to their original container. All eggshells can be turned in to your
child’s classroom. For anyone not
familiar with the process, these clean, dry eggshells will then be filled with
confetti and the hole in the top covered with tissue paper...hand them to a
child and use your imagination…they are VERY popular with the kids! We need 100’s of eggs so any donation is
appreciated. If you do not bake or
do not wish to save your shells, you are more than welcome to donate pre-made
Cascarones!
If you have any
questions or comments please contact Heather Sendera (hsendera@austin.rr.com). Thank you in advance for your
participation and assistance. Mark
your calendars for Friday, March 5, 2010. It should be a fantastic
carnival
