Did You Know?

Parent/Teacher Conferences this Month

How many times have you asked, "What did you do at school today?" And all too often the response is, "Nothing.  Well, the week of October 19 parents will get a chance to gain more insight into how their child is doing this year during Parent/Teacher conferences.  There is no school October 19 to allow teachers to meet with parents.  Please contact your child's teacher if you have not scheduled a time to meet.

Support Your OHE Eagles!!
Order an OHE T-shirt or Full-Zip Sweatshirt Jacket

This year we will again be offering OHE T-shirts in a short-sleeve style as well as a full-zip hooded sweatshirt jacket option.

The T-shirts are 100% cotton in a dark navy color. This year we have pre-ordered the shirts so they will be for sale at random school events as well as through this order form.

The sweatshirts are a 50/50 cotton/polyester blend in a black color.  The jacket design is the same as the jackets sold last year and will have a small eagle surrounded by the school name and the phrase “Home of the Soaring Eagles” on the left chest.

Samples of both the shirt and sweatshirt can be seen near the offices in the annex and the main building.  Orders for sweatshirts will be accepted through Friday, October 30th and T-shirt orders will be accepted all year.  Please complete the order form and return it to your child’s teacher along with your payment.  We are able to accept cash or checks made payable to OHE PTA.  Any overpayment will be treated as a donation to the PTA.  T-shirts will be delivered within 10 days of the receipt of the order and jackets are expected to be
delivered by mid-November.

Please note:
the youth T's run big and that the youth jackets run small. The adult sizes (of both) run about the right size.

If you have any questions, please contact Heather Sendera.

First Graders Tie Dye!

by Stephanie Swan

This last Friday, the students from Mrs. Flores, Mrs. Hernandez, and Mrs. Hamelright's 1st grade classes "traveled back to the '70's" and made tie-dyed t-shirts to wear on their class field trips this year.  The students used Sharpie markers and rubbing alcohol in leu of liquid dye to create "faux" tie-dyed designs of all kinds. There were rainbows, peace signs, flowers, spiral designs, and lots of great creativity going around-we even had '70's music to help us get "into the groove" of things!  Be on the lookout for all of these very unique and colorful shirts!

LOOKING AHEAD

By Wendy Primeaux
Legislative Liaison, Oak Hill PTA

I know for many of you it seems that high school is so very far in the future, but let me tell you, it really is here before you know it.  My first Oak Hill Eagle will graduate from Austin High this spring and it seems impossible that it was 13 years ago that I brought her to Oak Hill for the first time.

With that in mind, I would like to make you aware of some things that will have an impact on your child’s ongoing education.  First, in its last session the Texas Legislature changed the top 10% automatic admission to state universities rule to the top 8% beginning with the graduating class of 2011.  Here is a link to more detailed information on this legislative action.

Also, House Bill 3 changed the elective graduation requirements concerning PE and health.  The district is conducting an online survey soliciting feedback from parents on how they would like to see these changes implemented.   Provided is a link to the AISD main website.  On the home page, look for the big red check and you will see how to access the survey and more information on this bill.   http://www.austin.isd.tenet.edu/

In addition, Dr. Lucio Calzada, the principal of Austin High School, will conduct a question and answer information session regarding HB3 for the AISD community at Austin High on October 21 at 6:00 in the Performing Arts Center.

Mark your calendars!

Boundary news you can use!

Please take some time to check out the boundary update flyer in your child’s take-home folder. For more boundary news, go to www.boundary.ohepta.org. Be on the lookout for a survey regarding your concerns and priorities for the boundary process during the week of October 19th.  Also, mark your calendars for an Oak Hill Elementary Boundary Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, October 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Building Cafeteria.

Dads, bring your child to school this Thursday and have a donut on us!

Calling all Dads (or other male role models) to take their kids to school on Thursday, October 22, for Donuts With Your Dude! Stop by the playground under the blue shade from 7:15 a.m. to 7:40 a.m. where you and your child can enjoy donuts, bananas, coffee and orange juice before school starts. (Students must still arrive to class by 7:45 a.m.) Donuts With Your Dude is a new event organized by the PTA’s Welcoming Committee as a way to recognize the special role that dads (or other male role models) play in a child’s education. For more on this topic, check out the Texas PTA web site.

Celebrate School Bus Driver’s Appreciation Week

October 19-23
School Bus Driver’s Appreciation Week gives all of us the chance to thank and recognize our bus drivers and transportation employees including monitors, mechanics, dispatchers, and supervisors for keeping our students safe every day.

The position of a school bus driver requires tremendous responsibility; every day, twice a day, our transportation employees carry more than 20,000 students to and from school on 368 different routes. They drive in fair and foul weather, and have to maneuver through traffic regardless of road conditions, while also maintaining the conduct of the students on the bus. Transportation employees are also looked upon for leadership and life-saving decision-making in the event of an emergency. As you can see, these are essential personnel who work hard to get students to and from school on time regardless of the challenges that come their way.

Although we should express our heartfelt appreciation throughout the year, please set aside some extra time during this special week in October to show how much you appreciate these hard workers for the outstanding job that they do and the service that they provide for our students every day.

Simple Ways You Can Show Appreciation:

1. Present your bus drivers and transportation employees with a thank you card and a wonderful potluck style lunch or breakfast on behalf of the student body or employees
2. Create posters or a bulletin board and encourage employees and students to post thank you notes and appreciation messages
3. Have your employees, student council, art classes, or drill teams make a large appreciation banner that can be placed on the side of the campus access road
4. Leave a "goodie bag" on each bus with a variety of healthy snacks and a thank you note on behalf of the school or office
5. Have students participate in a poetry-writing contest to honor school bus drivers and transportation employees
6. Include a “School Bus Driver’s Appreciation Week” message on your school and stadium marquees
7. Organize a school assembly to emphasize school-bus safety and to recognize school bus drivers or transportation employees
