for Student Council!
Student Council elections will be held
Tuesday, November 3rd. Fourth
graders may run for vice-president and treasurer. Fifth
graders may run for president and
secretary. Each third, fourth and fifth
grade class chooses two representatives (one boy and one girl) and an
alternate. Officer candidates will
deliver speeches on Tuesday, November 3rd, then the students will
return to their class to vote. After
the officer voting is held, the class will then vote for their
representatives. Please refer to the web site for campaign guidelines,

The Oak Hill Student Council is comprised of

school spirit, participates in leadership building activities, holds
fundraisers and uses the money raised to improve the school. The student council members are responsible
for voicing the ideas and opinions of their classmates and sharing the
results
of the student council meeting with their class.

Peer Buddy Program Opening Now Available
Currently,
there is an immediate opening for a peer buddy to attend Oak Hill
Elementary School from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The
Peer Buddy Program is designed for typically developing three/four year
olds to provide peer models or "buddies" for three/four year old
children who are receiving special education services in the public
school setting. Peer models have the opportunity to be leaders, be
helpers, make new friends, and participate in activities such as art,
music, physical skill building, group learning and story time with a
certified teacher and teacher assistant. They also learn basic school
routines.
The program has been developed to ensure
appropriate peer role models for our students with needs in the areas
of speech/language, listening, and social and behavior; therefore, we
do not charge a monthly fee. For more information about the program,
and/or an application form, please contact Ms. Lauri Schattenberg,
Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities Teacher, at 841-7847.
To be considered for the program, the child must have been three years
of age on or before September 1, 2009.

Annual 4th Grade Halloween Safety Rules Skits
On
Friday, October 30th, the 4th grade students dressed up in their
Halloween best and performed skits for their fellow OHE students. They
gave important tips on Halloween safety as well as fun information
about Halloween. Each student was given a bag small bag of candy that
was donated and stuffed by the 4th grade class. These skits are
performed every year by the 4th grade.
Fire Safety Presentation in Kinder class
Last
week, Ms. Polan's Kindergarteners had a special guest do a presentation
on fire safety. Kevin Rowe, a firefighter with the Austin Fire
Department and an OHE dad, gave the kids a short presentation on fire
safety. They discussed smoke detectors, what to do if your house or
apartment is on fire, when to call 911 (and when not to call 911), home
evacuation plans and safety with matches and lighters.
The children were very well behaved and had many excellent questions.
They even got to see what a firefighter looks like in all their
firefighting clothes as he was able to bring in his firefighting gear
and put it all on so the kids would know not to be scared of
firefighters.
The kids all received stickers and fire safety activity books at the end of the presentation.

Residents of Lantana, TC West, Old Bee Caves Rd, Fletcher Drive, and Oak Run: WE WANT YOU!
As you may already be aware, Austin ISD is in the process of reviewing southwest elementary school boundary lines. Because Oak Hill Elementary is projected to reach 140% capacity (1204 students) by the 2012-13 school year, it is very likely that our school will be looked at closely for overcrowding relief. What this means is that neighborhoods currently zoned to Oak Hill Elementary could be re-zoned to a different school, effective August 2010.
The Oak Hill Elementary geographic boundary is broken into four planning areas: 49 (Travis Country, Barton Creek, Barton View), 149 (Circle Drive, Fitzhugh Rd, Thomas Springs Rd,) 249 (Scenic Brook, Covered Bridge) and 349 (Lantana, TC West, Old Bee Caves Rd, Fletcher Drive, Oak Run).
Area 349 makes up 36% of our school population and we need to hear from you! We want to reach out to the residents of Area 349 and set up a communication network to keep you up-to-date about what is going on. Please contact Casie Wenmohs, OHE Boundary Working Group Chair, at ckw@austin.rr.com if you live in Area 349 and you would be willing to help with our boundary communication efforts by talking to your neighbors and setting up an email distribution list.
For all the latest boundary news and information, please go to www.boundary.ohepta.org. If you have questions or feedback, contact the OHE Boundary Task Force Representatives, Cathy Cox and Molly Austin, at boundaryreps@ohepta.org

WANT TO HELP THE LIBRARY?

Ms Underwood is looking for donations for decorations to turn the library into a travelers’ paradise for Destination BOOK FAIR. If you have anything on the list that you wouldn’t mind the library borrowing until Dec. 8, please contact Ms. Underwood through a reply on this note, email or a call to 414-5151. Since I need a few of some items, but many of other items, it will help if I know what may be donated so I can reply with a “yes” or “no” that it is still needed or not.
Please make sure item(s) is(are) labeled with student’s first and last name (and if space teacher or grade) so item can be safely returned.

Second Grade Field Trip:
Innerspace Caverns-Georgetown, Texas
Oak Hill Elementary Second Graders had a fun filled day at
the Innerspace Caverns on November 22, 2009.
Deep within the caves, the children were able to see fossils and bats
and experience a moment of time within the cavern with no natural light at
all! Not only did the kids get to touch some of the
stalagmites and stalagtites, they also got to practice their mining
skills! Each child was given a bag of
sand that had hidden gem stones placed inside.
Everyone had their own mining tray to sift through the sand and find
their precious gem stones. Everyone was
so excited about their treasure to take home from the caverns. Finally, the day ended with a picnic under
the shadey oak trees that cover the grounds of the Innerspace Caverns. The
second grade team appreciates all of the parents and volunteers that joined in
on the fun and helped make the day special for the kids!
