Library News

ATTENTION   STUDENTS   AND   PARENTS...

PLEASE DO NOT PUT WATER BOTTLES IN BACKPACKS. CARRY YOUR BOTTLES OR
LEAVE THEM AT SCHOOL TO REFILL THEM IN THE MORNINGS.

ONE OF OUR CHARACTER TRAITS IS RESPECT.
Let’s respect school property by taking care of our library books!

In the months of September and October we have lost over $150 worth of books due to water damage. These books have to be throw away and replaced due to mold concerns. With just a little more attention to care, we will be able to buy new books versus replacing old books to make our collection even better!

STUDENTS: PLEASE SHOW RESPECT BY BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR BOOK(S). KEEP WATER, FOOD, AND PETS AWAY FROM THEM. KEEP BOOKS IN A SAFE PLACE LIKE YOUR BACKPACK!!!

PARENTS: PLEASE HELP STUDENTS BY REMINDING THEM TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR BOOK(S) AND RETURNING THEIR BOOK(S) ON TIME!!!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION!

5th grade field trip

written by Franny, an OHE Fifth Grader

On Wednesday, November 5th my class and I went on a field trip to McKinney Falls.  After everyone got off the bus, Mrs. Osio's, Mrs. Wiley's, and Mrs. Ledbetter's classes all gathered around the front of the McKinney Falls building.
The classes split up, and we went on a nature hike.  On the hike we saw Old Baldy; a green area with wildlife, and we went through a rock shelter looking for types of erosion.  Later on, we came to a large limestone area where we looked for hollow spots in the rock.  Then we came back and looked at fossils and rocks in the McKinnery Falls building.

We went in an exhibit room showing the stages of Onion Creek before man came, when Indians came, when Mr. and Mrs. McKinney were there and now, when McKinney Falls became a state park.

Later, we walked to the actual falls. Not much water was in them, but they were beautiful.  We saw turtles basking in the sun.  Shane, one of our tour guides, was telling us about the pollution history at the Falls.  We also got some of the lake water and looked for invertebrate bugs that are at the bottom of the food chain. We found a lot and sorted them into groups.

Finally it was time for lunch and games.  After that, it was time to get back on the buses and head back to Oak Hill Elementary.  I had a blast!

Are You Interested in a Dual Language Two-Way Immersion Program at OHE?

AISD is currently discussing the possibility of implementing a dual language two-way immersion program in some elementary schools for the 2010-2011 school year. Please help the OHE PTA determine the level of interest in implementing such a program at OHE by completing this two-minute survey. The deadline for completing this survey is Thursday, November 12th.

Not sure what a dual language two-way immersion program is? Read on!

Dual language two-way immersion programs offer students an opportunity to become bilingual and biliterate in both English and another language such as Spanish. These programs
  •     Develop academic proficiency in both languages simultaneously,
  •     Serve both English speakers and Spanish speakers, and
  •     Typically start in kindergarten and continue through the 5th grade or possibly to middle and/or high school.
Dual language two-way immersion programs differ from traditional bilingual education programs such as the one currently offered at OHE in that they serve both native English speakers and native Spanish speakers in an integrated environment with the goal of teaching both languages. Both groups of students study together most of the day. They learn language through academic content instruction in both languages taught in separate time sequences.  For example, students may learn science in English and math in Spanish one day and the other way around another day.  All students become proficient in using two languages for communication and learning.

Studies are showing that two-way immersion students, both English dominant students and Spanish dominant students, out perform their peers in cognitive skills and academic achievement.

For more information about two-way immersion programs please visit http://www.cal.org/twi/FAQ/faq1.htm.  You may also contact Ileana Abounader (512-965-4781) or Shelli Dinius-Hix  (512-338-9950).

FYI – Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 19.  AISD will be hosting a public discussion about dual language programs at Sanchez Elementary School. Click here for details.

Teaching Garden Project Underway

As you may have noticed, the landscape at the Kindergarten Annex is looking a lot different these days.  Gone are the dead and dying shrubs as well as the stumps that dotted the landscape.  Now, stairs, limestone borders, fresh decomposed granite and gravel mark the beginnings of a beautiful and enriching garden.

This transformation is all due to the hard work of the AISD Grounds crew.  They spent several long days excavating (by hand) the area to lay the  beautifully bordered pathway. Aesthetics aside, this improvement also creates better drainage along the front of the building and provides more thorough access for pest control.  We can also thank AISD for the stone steps that will help kindergarteners and their parents have a safer walk down the embankment to the granite path.

This work has been a perfect jumpstart for the Grounds Committee to begin the next phase of this project.  As of now, the next step is to create three bordered gardens filled with plants that attract butterflies, hummingbirds and birds plus begin work on new granite paths.

Parents, faculty, staff and administration...join us in this momentous endeavor and help us make this garden grow!  While this garden will primarily be a place where students can observe and study birds, butterflies and other creatures, this garden is for us all.

Contact Luci at 899-8778 or at luci@latimer.com for more information or to let me know you would like to help!
