WANT TO HELP THE LIBRARY BECOME A TRAVELER’S DREAM FOR THE BOOK FAIR?

Ms Underwood is looking for donations for decorations to turn the library into a travelers’ paradise for Destination BOOK FAIR. If you have anything on the list that you wouldn’t mind the library borrowing until Dec. 8, please contact Ms. Underwood or a call to 414-5151. Since I need a few of some items, but many of other items, it will help if I know what may be donated so I can reply with a “yes” or “no” that it is still needed or not.

Please make sure item(s) is(are) labeled with student’s first and last name (and if space teacher or grade) so item can be safely returned.
  • Vintage suitcases

  • Toy cars
  • Hot air balloons (I know…random)

**I WOULD REALLY LOVE THE PHOTOS OR POSTCARDS...I am trying to make an Oak Hill Travel's the World Board...please look through photos this weekend and find a great picture of your family at a US landmark (Grand Canyon, Alamo, Statue of Liberty, etc. ) or a visit to another country...Be sure to label name, teacher and LOCATION. If you don't want to send the original, please make a copy (paper is fine). Thanks!!!

Spring Carnival News!

It is never too early to start thinking about the PTA spring carnival!

Remember that our kids benefit directly from the carnival profits.  This money is used for classroom teaching materials, aids, programs and supplies to ensure that our students have the tools necessary to learn.

Yes, we are already accepting donations!  There are boxes in both the annex and main building lobbies, clearly marked for carnival donations.  Items that we will need this year include:

 a. Children’s books in excellent/very good condition
 b. NEW, wrapped, small toys: if you visit a fast-food establishment and can convince your kids not to open their toys, please donate them!
 c. Monetary contributions: if you feel the need to contribute and cannot assist in another way, we will always gladly accept donations.  These funds will be used to purchase prizes, food, etc for the night of carnival.
 d. And, last but definitely not least, our confetti eggs!
While baking or making your daily breakfast, please remember to crack your eggs leaving approximately 2/3 of the eggshell intact.  The eggshell should then be washed thoroughly and returned to their original container.  All eggshells can be turned in to your child’s classroom.  For anyone not familiar with the process, these clean, dry eggshells will then be filled with confetti and the hole in the top covered with tissue paper...hand them to a child and use your imagination…they are VERY popular with the kids!  We need 100’s of eggs so any donation is appreciated.  If you do not bake or do not wish to save your shells, you are more than welcome to donate pre-made Cascarones!

If you have any questions or comments please contact Heather Sendera . Thank you in advance for your participation and assistance.  Mark your calendars for Friday, March 5, 2010.  It should be a fantastic carnival.

Mark your calendars!

Innisbrook Giftwrap and Chocolates are on their way!  Just in time for the Holidays! Highest Selling Students Recognized and Awarded at Friday Assembly

By Kristie Peterman

Thank you for supporting the Oak Hill PTA through purchasing chocolate and giftwrap!!  The sale, which ran through the end of September and concluded at the beginning of October,  was a success thanks to the entire Oak Hill community,  friends, relatives and, of course, parents!  Thank you so much!! Profits from the sale exceeded a little over $10,000.  The Projects and Goals committee will decide how this money will be spent and how it will enrich the learning experiences of every child at Oak Hill Elementary.

Six "Super Selling Soarers of the Sale" were recognized at morning assembly on Friday.   Sponsored by the PTA, a prize was given to students who sold the greatest amount of product  in their grade.  Additionally, a student was recognized and awarded for being the TOP SELLER of the school.     Thank you to these businesses for donating prizes:  Learning Express, Westgate Lanes, Blazer Tag and Build -a-Bear.    We appreciate your support to OAK HILL!

The PTA is anticipating the arrival of the Innisbrook Truck any day now!! The truck is is due to arrive before the Thanksgiving Holidays.  It has been shipped and is making its way to Texas.   If you would like to volunteer to help distribute the giftwrap and chocolate to the students so that they can take it home, please contact Kristie Peterman at 663-0651.  She will be the first person to be notified of the exact day and time of the delivery. Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH  for supporting the Innisbrook Giftwrap and Chocolate Sale.

Author Visits OHE!

If you thought you spotted a Rock Star or Magician in Oak Hill on November 2, you would be partially correct!  But the real reason for a crowd of autograph-seeking third graders was a visit from author Pseudonymous Bosch.  In addition to a few magic tricks, Bosch was in the library to read from his three popular books and sign copies that were offered to students prior to the visit.  If you missed buying one, be sure to check in the school library or our upcoming Book Fair!

Fifth Graders go to McKinney Falls State Park

written by Paola, a fifth grader at OHE

On November Fourth, my class and two other 5th Grade classes took a field trip to McKinney Falls State Park. It was a lot of fun.

I really enjoyed the hike. I loved trying to find a hollow place in the limestone rock. If you put your ear against the hallow voids it made an echolike noise. Walking down the hill was no problem, but going up was a challenge.
After we got to the falls, it was a little disappointing. The falls did not have much water, but the tiny turtles were an amazing sight.  My favorite part of the field trip was looking for the invertebrates through the swampy water. Did you know that grass shrimps are transparent? I even saw these little red spots that were really a type of spider! The park rangers split us up into groups of four. My group found almost all of the invertebrates except two, and one was a leach.

Overall I had a really great time. I hope to come back soon and see if there are any new activities for me to try. I also hope that more water will be coming down the falls.

First Graders Perform at OHE

On Thursday, Oct. 29th our OHE 1st graders entertained our school community by performing fun Halloween songs like the Adams Family theme, Have You Seen the Ghost of John?, and a selection from Little Shop of Horrors.   They had hand movements to go with the songs, and one class even did a round.   Before every song, students from each class impressed us with their reading and public speaking abilities and either told jokes or described the song they were about to sing.   My favorite part was their canned laughter so that the audience would know when to laugh after the jokes.   (Whichever child has the boisterous goat laugh is to be particularly commended.)   Great job, 1st graders, and a huge thanks to our talented music teachers:  Mrs. Brown and Mr. Bowers, and our dear OHE 1st grade teachers, for preparing the 1st graders for this festive and charming performance!

Third Graders Trip to the Wildflower Center

On October 27 & 28 the third graders descended on the Wildflower Center to expand their knowledge of the plant life cycle.  Students began their observation of plants in various gardens by identifying the plants, discribing their properties and documenting pollenation methods.  As we walked through the park, students collected dropped seeds and catagorized them by four disperment methods: by water; eaten then dropped as animal scat; a blast from the plant to travel by air; and as a "hichhiker" clinging to animals or clothing.

Next students hit the trails where they ran off some energy but also observed meadow and forest environments noting differing levels of plant decomposition.

Finally to get a bird's eye view, groups of students traveled to the top of the stone lookout tower.  In an otherwise rainy month, the trip landed on a perfect day to learn outside the classroom!

OHE's FIRST EVER MOVIE NIGHT!

by Geeta Suggs, OHE Family Fun Nights Chairperson

Many OHE families came out Friday night to our first ever OHE PTA Movie Night. All seemed to have a great night despite our slow start due to technical
difficulties!

Upon arrival, many donated their food items to the Capital Area Food Bank, received their free tickets, and bought their concessions, and t-shirts, too. The kids then received glow bracelets (I think this is going to be a staple at all OHE Family Fun nights!!) and waited patiently for the doors to open. It was incredible to see so many families that brought sleeping bags and pillows to make our OHE Cafeteria floor comfortable for a few hours!

After everyone settled in, a slide show began... BABY PICTURES of our dear OHE Faculty and Staff. What a hoot! The kids laughed and tried very hard to guess who each person was! Watching the kids watch the slide show was a joy itself. After the movie ended, door prizes were given out randomly to 3 lucky winners. The grand prize included the DVD we watched that night, movie passes, candy, popcorn, and a snuggly throw!

Here are a few stats about the night:

    * approximately 450 people in attendance
    * 184 food items collected to be donated to the Capital Area Food Bank
    * lots & lots of candy, popcorn, and water consumed
    * 75+ volunteers to make this night feasible

So many people made this night happen. I thank you all so very much for your support and dedication in making our school community better and stronger than ever before. Special thanks goes out to my 2nd grader, who spent his day off from school last Monday helping me make the 12'x8' foot movie screen. Also, thank you to Ms. Whistler - we couldn't have done any of this without you.

Thank you to the following people who made this night possible:

Constable Richard McCain
Barton Creek AMC Theaters for movie tickets for the door prizes
Cinemark at Hill Country Galleria for movie tickets for the door prizes
Ms. Frances and her custodial staff
Ms. Underwood
Mr. Bowers
Ms. May
