OHE FORUMS - A new addition to our communication improvements!
by Geeta Suggs
Do you want to help out but don't know where to start? Check out the new OHE PTA Forums! Our PTA has many, many committees that all do several things around our school. The new Forums are an online gathering place for posting questions, ideas, and in general a place to sign up for things.
We are starting out slowly. The teacher appreciation committee has posted some things that they need help with. Hopefully soon, other committees will post their needs, etc.
If you are not familiar with forums, it is a bulletin board of sorts. Anyone may read the forums but in order to post, you must create a login (name and password). That will be your login for you to be able to sign up and help.
One of the advantages of these type of setup is that you won't see multiple emails being sent around when signing up to bring items, volunteer time, etc. Everything is kept in the forum. Once you post, you can even get email notifications if something else is posted on that thread. In general, though, the forums are a place where you have to go to find out information. So, check it out and check back often.

Do you Want to go Back to Paper Notes in our child's folders?
Did
you know that having online services like this e-newsletter, the OHEPTA

Most online services out there are a monthly fee. Do you like what
we've done? Do you think that we should continue this route or should
be go back to the paper method? Please let us know!!! Show your support
by helping us pay for these things by joining the OHE PTA!
The PTA provides many functions to our school and we need your support. It is a mere $6 per individual for a school year. And
NOW, we have made it very easy for you to pay right from your computer.
We now accept major credit cards and electronic checks for PTA
membership and/or donations! Please note there is a convenience charge for
making online payments. For example, your $6 membership is actually $7
online. If you do not want to pay online, please contact the membership committee to sign up!
It's a small price to pay to get ALL of this information, isn't it? PLEASE help us keep it going!
JOIN TODAY or consider making a donation to us! It's quick and painless! THANK YOU for supporting our efforts to make our school a great place for our children!
Oak Hill’s "RoBros" enter FIRST LEGO League Competition!
by Sara Spears
Can robots save our world’s climate issues? Maybe not robots, but our students from Oak Hill Elementary are going to try! Oak Hill now has our very first ever FIRST LEGO League team - the RoBros! The team is made up of several 5th grade boys, ages 10 and 11. They are researching, designing, programming and building a Lego NXT Mindstorm robot to compete in the FIRST LEGO League qualifying competition, which will be held December 6th at Hill Country Middle School.
The 10th Anniversary FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge – "Climate Connections" will focus on robotic solutions and research projects that will address global climate issues. With more than 135,000 children (from 40 countries, ranging in age from 9 to 14), expected to participate, this Challenge will be the largest to date. FFL was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway, to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology.
"Climate Connections" is a two-part Challenge. In The Project phase, teams will conduct research to identify a problem caused by climate in their area, analyze climate data about the problem, create an innovative solution, and share their research and solution with their community. In The Robot Game, teams will apply science and engineering to master complex missions related to the study of climate. One of our students commented, "It’s really fun to work with LEGO Robots because you come up with your own ideas and then test the robots to see if the ideas work. I get together with a bunch of friends and we do it all by ourselves! No parents!"
"Climate Connections" is giving our children a hands-on, minds-on, real-world experience allowing them to use their imaginations and creativity in combination with science and technology. In addition, the competition gives them an opportunity to work together to experience first-hand the challenges faced by some of the world’s leading scientists. As a result of these competitions, FLL participants develop the curiosity, creative problem-solving skills, and confidence needed to face tomorrow’s challenges. The RoBros have selected as their focus "Slow Go on the H20". The team has come up with some innovative solutions to Austin’s water conservation issues.
"For 10 years, our annual Challenges have put kids in the driver’s seat to explore and test solutions in a fun and engaging way. FLL kids are what our society needs to build the workforce of the future in an increasingly competitive global marketplace," said Dean Kamen, FIRST founder.
One of our OHE team members talked about how exciting it was when they accomplished the mission that first time. The mom commented on how they were jumping up and down and screaming and the student said, "This is what the NASA team must have felt like when the Shuttle lifted off the first time!!!"
While this is Oak Hill’s first pilot program team, we are hoping to build the program in the years to come by adding more teams and recruiting sponsors to show the world the creativity and skills that we have at Oak Hill! We would also like to thank Mindy Thompson for sponsoring the RoBros.
Reflections Gallery
By Beth Griesmer
"Wow" truly is the word for it. This year's entries in the annual Reflections program werefantastic. Oak Hill students fromkindergarten through fifth grade created works of art with this year's theme of"Wow" in mind. There were poems aboutFall, short stories about new puppies, collages, splatter paintings, photostaken at a local animal shelter, videos, violin music and so much more. There was even the state of Texas craftedout of plastic soldiers!
Reflections is an arts recognition and achievement programstarted by the national PTA in 1969. Studentshave the opportunity to express themselves in six categories: visual arts, dance choreography, film/video production, music, literature, and photography.Although the entries are judged by a panel, the goal is participation notwinning. Parents are asked to encouragea child's creativity, but not to give assistance on the actual work.
Students viewed the Reflections entries on display this pastTuesday and families and friends could come to see them that evening before theRecognition Ceremony. Selected entriesadvance to council judging on November 30th, where they compete with other Austin schools.
Getting to see all the creativity and hard work that wentinto this program hopefully inspired more students to participate in the nextReflections program. A very special thanksto Amy Sasser for all her hard work in making this program a wonderful successat Oak Hill.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2009 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards. The deadline for the teaching and principal nominations is Friday, November 21, 2008, and the deadline for the school district nominations is Friday, January 2, 2009.
For the first time in the award's eight-year history, nominations are being accepted online at www.heb.com/education. Nomination forms can also be picked up at any H-E-B store. Parents, students, and colleagues are strongly encouraged to nominate their favorite teacher, principal or school district. Self-nominations are also welcome.
The Teaching Awards fall into three categories: Rising Star: less than 10 years of classroom experience; Leadership: 10-20 years of classroom experience; and Lifetime Achievement: more than 20 years of classroom experience.
The Principal Awards are granted to one elementary principal and one secondary principal. The School District awards go to one large school district (4A or 5A) and one small district (1A, 2A or 3A).
The H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program was launched in 2002 as a strong way to support public education in Texas. It is a personal initiative of H-E-B CEO and Chairman, Charles Butt, who implemented the program to highlight the outstanding practices of Texas public schools and spotlight and celebrate the work of Texas educators. Since its inception, the program has handed out more than $3 million to 773 educators and 155 schools and districts across the state.

Friday Morning Assembly – November 14, 2008
By Janet Vito
With an enthusiastic study body, Mr. Coupon led today's assembly cheering "Happy Friday!" A 4th Grade student led the standing students in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American and Texas flags, followed by a minute of silence.
Today's assembly was full of information and activities.
- Mrs. Bergh along with Mr. Coupon led the group with the "Chair Dance" – a sit-down exercise activity set to music.
- Mr. Coupon then reminded the students about lunch time rules reflecting on an incident where two students collided in the lunch room: 1) Walk only, 2) Remember, food is not a toy, 3) Leave a pathway for students buying lunch, 4) Talk only to the people right around you, 5) Raise your hand for help, 6) Be polite, 7) Eat your own food, and 8) Throw away your own trash.
- The Eagles of the Day were announced and Mr. Coupon led the students in the "Keep on Soaring" cheer. He then announced today's lunch menu, followed by a reminder of when and how to turn in lunch money.
- Birthday songs were next where students who had birthdays in the last couple of weeks stood up and the study body sang Happy Birthday.
- The 4th Grade Choir went on stage and gave a beautiful performance of, "America, America."
- This was followed by Picture Time for the Soaring Eagles over the last 3 weeks.
The assembly ended with the School Song and dismissal, and a very happy group of kids.

Online shopping this holiday season?
Are you planning on doing some of your holiday shopping online this year? Consider going through this link to your favorite online retailers to get some of the money you spend to come back to our school? It's true! I bought something recently through this link and our school will receive $0.52 of my purchase. It's not much but if we all did it, just think of the money we could get for our school!
