Tis the Season for Benchmark Testing
by Alice Wiley, OHE 5th Grade Teacher
The Middle of the Year Benchmarks (MOY) are very important since they show the growth of the student since the beginning of the year. They help us to fine tune our teaching and target areas of weakness. This testing affects multiple grade levels.
Lunch Bunch
By Barbara Christenson, Assistant Principal
Grades 1 through 5 have been enjoying "Lunch Bunch" on the stage as a reward for good cafeteria behavior. In order for this to continue on a weekly basis we need parent volunteers to supervise the students. Lunch Bunch is on Monday from 10:45 until 1:30. Please e-mail Barbara Christenson, assistant principal: bchriste@austinisd.org. Thank you!
PUBLIC HEARINGS ON NEW BOUNDARIES FOR MIDDLE SCHOOLS
By Hannah Neill
The Boundary Task Force for the new Southwest Middle School will forth a proposal which in two public forums - THIS WEEK. This proposal is different from the proposal presented to the CACs in October. At these forums, the public will be encouraged to speak. The details for these meetings are:
Tuesday, December 2, 6:30 p.m.
Bailey Middle School Cafeteria
4020 Lost Oasis Hollow, 414-4990
Thursday, December 4, 6:30 p.m.
Small Middle School Cafeteria
4801 Monterey Oaks Blvd., 841-6700
WHAT DOES THE PROPOSAL SAY?
Currently - in the area of prime interest to Oak Hill families, the proposal affects the Small MS boundaries by making a split through the Mills community. Approximately 50% of Mills will go to the new school and about 50% will remain at Small. No changes were made to the tracking of Oak Hill students (to Small or O. Henry).
This is still a proposal and the task force expects it may have to amend the proposal based on public input.
The proposal is on the AISD website for you to preview:

It is never too early to start thinking about the PTA spring carnival!
Remember that our kids benefit directly from the carnival profits. This money is used for classroom teaching materials, aids, programs and supplies to ensure that our students have the tools necessary to learn.
Items that we will need this year include:
- Children’s books in excellent/very good condition
- NEW, wrapped, small toys: if you visit a fast-food establishment and can convince your kids not to open their toys, please donate them!
- Monetary contributions: if you feel the need to contribute and cannot assist in another way, we will always gladly accept donations. These funds will be used to purchase prizes, food, etc for the night of carnival.
- And, last but definitely not least, our confetti eggs! While baking for the holidays please remember to crack your eggs leaving approximately 2/3 of the eggshell intact. The eggshell should then be washed thoroughly and returned to their original container. All eggshells can be turned in to your child’s classroom. For anyone not familiar with the process, these clean, dry eggshells will then be filled with confetti and the hole in the top covered with tissue paper...hand them to a child and use your imagination…they are VERY popular with the kids! We need 100’s of eggs so any donation is appreciated. If you do not bake or do not wish to save your shells, you are more than welcome to donate pre-made Cascarones!
If you have any questions or comments please contact Heather Sendera or Vali Martin.
Thank you in advance for your participation and assistance. Mark your calendars for Friday, March 6. It should be a fantastic carnival!
O. Henry Prospective Parent Night
For all of you future O. Henry parents needing some inside scoop, plan to attend the Prospective Parent Information Night in the O. Henry cafeteria from 6:30 to 7:30 on Tuesday, December 2. This is an informal gathering sponsored by the O. Henry PTA. Bring all your questions and concerns, and they will be addressed by current O. Henry parents, staff and the principal. So, whether you know already, or are still looking at middle school options for next year, this session will provide you with a wealth of information from parents who have been in your shoes and can give you a lot of perspective. If you would like to be included on an email distribution list I am compiling to keep all our O. Henry-bound kids and their parents up-to-date and in the loop, please email me at the address below, put O. Henry in the subject line, and I will add you to the list. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Hope to see you on December 2!

Earth School Presentation
By Beth Griesmer
This week fifth grade students participated in the Earth School Presentations. The City of Austin provides this program every year to fifth graders to educate them about Austin's watersheds, the Edwards Aquifer and water quality. It is a hands-on program that allows students to visualize the impact of pollution on the water supply through the use of models.
A model of "Middle Creek" running though hillsides dotted with tiny plastic houses sits at each table as four or five students take turns with water and different kinds of pollution to pour into the creek or run off the hillsides. A tub is under each model and one student has a large bucket to catch the water as it goes through the simulated landscape.
Students are asked to make hypotheses about the outcome as they go through the various exercises directed by an instructor from the city. So if your fifth grader comes home spouting facts about the Austin water supply, you know why. This is an eye-opening program that helps the students understand where our water comes from and the every day human impact on our water supply.

OHE FORUMS - HELP US OUT TODAY!
by Geeta Suggs
Do you want to help out but don't know where to start? Check out the new OHE PTA Forums! Our PTA has many, many committees that all do several things around our school. The new Forums are an online gathering place for posting questions, ideas, and in general a place to sign up for things. Lots of new things have been posted this past week and we need help everywhere. CHECK IT OUT!
If you are not familiar with forums, it is a bulletin board of sorts. Anyone may read the forums but in order to post, you must create a login (name and password). That will be your login for you to be able to sign up and help.
One of the advantages of these type of setup is that you won't see multiple emails being sent around when signing up to bring items, volunteer time, etc. Everything is kept in the forum. Once you post, you can even get email notifications if something else is posted on that thread. In general, though, the forums are a place where you have to go to find out information. So, check it out and check back often.
You can get to our forums here:
http://forums.ohepta.org
or from our home page on our website under the pencil buttons.
List of Teacher's Favorite Things
by Geeta Suggs
We asked our OHE Faculty and Staff to answer some questions about their favorite things. As we enter the season of gift giving or anytime during the year, take a moment to appreciate your child's teacher, for the job they do is not an easy one and certainly not one that everyone can do! The compiled list of favorites is located on the OHE PTA website under forms and it has also been sent out to all of the head room parents. There will be a book in the Main Building that will have all of this information in printed out format.
