THE OHE Lego Robotics Club is designed to enhance children’s problem solving and creative thinking skills. Students enrolled at Oak Hill Elementary in 2012-2013 in 4th and 5th grades are eligible to participate. Students will compete in an Austin tournament to complete tasks preset by the First Lego League. The club is run solely by volunteer parents who coach the teams after school. We will meet most weeks for the whole school year. The first half is geared towards tournament and the second half is our off-season where we learn through different types of fun challenges. After the applicants are selected by lottery, the teams will be assigned by the coordinators.
COMPETITION SEASON: Early August – December (could extend if teams advance at competition)
OFF SEASON: January - May
FEE: $100 (covers two different levels of registration for competition, team shirt, extra parts, resources, and all other expenses for August – May)
THEME: Every year FLL releases a challenge topic. This year the topic is “Senior Solutions”, which includes aging and how it may affect a person’s ability to maintain his or her lifestyle. Students will research obstacles, like getting around, keeping in touch, or staying fit and then suggest ways to improve the quality of life for the seniors affected.
APPLICATION QUESTIONS: Applicants are required to answer BOTH questions on page 2 to be considered. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please note that the answers are required but will NOT impact the lottery selection process. Answers may be given on an additional sheet of paper.
All registrants (children) agree to the following terms:
v Participants will comply to OHE School Rules during the club meetings. Failure to comply with the school rules will result in removal from the team without a refund.
v Club will meet twice a week: Mondays (6-7 pm) AND Fridays (2:45-4:30 pm). Teams will begin meeting in early August. Mentors and students are strongly urged to be at all meetings, especially after school starts in mid-August. Each student is part of a team and we don’t want a missing student to set back the whole team. This is a team oriented club. The competition is only 9 or 10 weeks after the start of school.
v Competition Dates are set by the Central Texas First Lego League and not by OHE. Based on previous years, competition is an all-day Saturday event in November or December. It is very important that all students be present at the competition as this is a team event. Unfortunately, we are not notified of the date until late October.
v If the number of registrations exceeds the number of available spots, a lottery will be used to determine placement.
v Current 4th grade Lego Robotics Team Members will be given priority. These students must complete this application also.
v If a parent/guardian volunteers to be a mentor, he/she will get a spot for his/her child. If the number of mentors exceeds the number of available spots, a lottery will be used to determine placement. Mentors will need to be available for all meetings and especially tournament regardless of your student’s availability.
v Every applicant must complete the questions on page 2 to be considered.
v Applications are DUE NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, APRIL 13 at 2:45pm in the main building office. No late entries will be accepted.
v Applicants will be notified by April 25th of their status.
v Payment of the club fee will be due before May 18th, 2012 so that we can register teams over the summer. Refunds will only be given if a student moves out of our school zone. All other fees will be considered donations to the club.
v Once applicants are selected, they will be invited to join the current OHE Lego Robotics team for the remaining sessions of this school year on Fridays from 2:45 to 4:30 (April 27, May 4, May 11, and May 18)
