OHE PTA 101

To many OHE families, the PTA can be confusing.  Here is a quick and basic tutorial to help you understand how the PTA works.

What is PTA?

The purpose of the PTA to provide parent education, family engagement and child advocacy.  This happens at the school, state and national level!

At OHE, we do this in a variety of ways, including hosting 2-3 educational parent programs each year, engaging our community through events such as our Our World, Our School event, providing volunteers for our notable SOARING reading program and raising funds to support our school through our No Hassle fundraiser and annual carnival.  OHE PTA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization whose goal is to enrich the lives of the OHE community.

Who is the PTA?

The PTA is made up of people just like you!  It consists of any parent, staff member, friend or community member who registers to be a member and pays the annual fee.  Our school has over 225 PTA members!

Why should I pay annual dues to join the PTA rather than just donating that $10 to the school?

The biggest benefit of joining the PTA is actually not the work that the OHE PTA does at our school, it is the work that the Texas and National PTA's do on behalf of their members.  Your annual fee to OHE PTA means that you are automatically a member of both Texas and National PTA.  Legislators may not listen to one voice but being able to say that the members of Texas PTA represents over 500,000 voters and that National PTA represents over 4 million voters can make a huge difference in swaying our representatives to vote on bills that directly affect our kids' education.  You can make a difference in state and national education decisions and funding just by being a PTA member!

When and where does the OHE PTA meet?

The PTA holds 4 General Meetings each year.  All PTA members are encouraged to attend these meetings and they are held at various times during the day in an attempt to accommodate members' schedules.  These meetings are often paired with parent programs.  Past topics have included: homework help, "Tiger Parents" and video games and kids.  At these meetings you can also learn about upcoming events, vote on how to spend PTA money and help make decisions regarding our school.

In addition to the General Meetings, the PTA board meetings monthly.  The elected PTA Board (President, 1st VP, 2nd VP, 3rd VP, Secretary and Treasurer) are required to attend these meetings.  The Principal is generally in attendance as are our 2 teacher representatives.  These meetings are open to all PTA members.

See the OHE calendar for all applicable meetings dates.

Why is the PTA always asking me for money?

We try hard not to ask for money!  In many of the things we do (school supplies, T-shirts, directory, yearbook, family fun events) we have a goal of just breaking even.  The intention of those things are to provide a service or build community, not make money.

But there are SO many things that our school wants to do or buy but can't fund.  That is where the OHE PTA steps in.  Last year we spent $40,000 buying supplies, technology and programs for our students and teachers.  Participation in any fundraiser is optional but the success of our fundraisers dictates the level of support we can provide to our teachers and students.  OHE can do so much more with our help!

I feel like I don't know what is going on at OHE.  What can I do?

There are many ways to stay informed.  Flyers come home periodically with information but the best way to stay on top of OHE happenings is the weekly e-newsletter and Principal's Blog.  You can subscribe to both using links on the OHE homepage at www.ohepta.org.  You can also check the website for new information and upcoming events or even link the OHE calendar to your Google calendar.  Our principal, Dr. Mitchell, also holds a monthly Principal's Coffee (see the calendar for specific dates) where she provides updates and answers questions.  Everyone is encouraged to attend!

I own a business, can I advertise at school?

Please see our Corporate Sponsors webpage at http://www.oakhillelementary.org/Corporate_Sponsors.html.  We would love to partner with you!

If I join, will I be obligated to help with PTA events?

Joining OHE PTA does not obligate you to help with PTA events.  However, there are many opportunities to help throughout the year and we will never turn down a volunteer!  See our Volunteer Interest Form if you are interested in helping with our programs or events!
