What is the SOARING Reading Program?
The SOARING Reading Program is a wonderful volunteer-based program designed to give individual students help in reading.
Who does the SOARING Reading Program help?
This program supports the teachers and students in 1st – 2nd grades. Children are selected to participate based on their reading assessments. If the teacher or the administration thinks that the student will benefit from some individual attention, they also participate in the SOARING Reading Program.
Why is the SOARING Reading Program Important?
Students increase in confidence and self-esteem by improving their reading skills. Immediate and frequent feedback from their Reading Coach keeps them reading and reaching for higher goals! Early intervention is key.
The SOARING Reading Program is an important tool to help OHE receive Exemplary ratings. It's amazing what a little individual attention and practice can do.
Who makes it happen?
Volunteers (like you!) help students SOAR to new heights in reading.
At the core of this wildly successful program is a team of dedicated volunteers. These volunteer “mentors” devote just 30 minutes per week (or more if you have it) to reading with a child, cheering them on, and giving them the special attention they need to soar.
How can you help?
The SOARING (Support Our Awesome Readers in New Goals) Reading program is looking for volunteers for just short time once a week. The program begins in October and ends mid-May. By volunteering your time, you will mentor and coach students (grades 1-2) to improve their reading fluency and comprehension using proven reading and phonics activities and Read Naturally software. The research is clear that early intervention in reading helps a child succeed even through high school and college. Please sign up for one or more half-hour sessions!
The SOARING Reading Program is open to parents, grandparents, community members, etc. AISD requires that you submit to a background check and program volunteers will train you prior to your first session. Click here to find out about the volunteer requirements at OHE. Many volunteers are needed in order to successfully support our students in improving their reading skills. This is one of OHE's largest ongoing volunteer programs.
