Between beach vacations, road trips, and long, lazy afternoons with your family, summer is simply the best season for sinking into a stack of great books. With that in mind, I'm going to featuring some of my top summer reading picks in this newsletter all summer long.
Kicking off the series with ten brand-new tales of adventure, friendship, and bravery, I've put together a list of timeless stories that will appeal to anyone who appreciates great characters and classic storytelling -- these are some of my absolute favorite books published so far this year.

"Share the Gift of Reading:  Hit a Home Run for Reading 2011"

Sign up your child for the award-winning "Hit a Home Run for Reading" program!  Students receive:

·         4 Round Rock Express baseball tickets

·         Stickers, bookmarks, pencils and other fun prizes just for reading during the summer break.

·         The school with the highest number of students in the program will receive $500 from the A- Federal Credit Union to purchase library books plus a visit from the Round Rock Express mascot. **

AUSTIN PUBLIC LIBRARY PRESENTS: DIG UP A GOOD BOOK

Join the 2011 Summer Reading Program at the Austin Public Library. The instructions are simple! Here’s what you do:

1.      Sign up at the Library or online

2.      Read, read, read.

3.      Record the books you read and your opinions in your reading log.

Return your completed log to any Austin Public Library location between July 1 and August 31, 2011, and choose a book to keep!

**Literature Live presents Chicken Big!, one of the 2011 2X2 books, throughout the summer at all APL branches. The Hampton Branch at Oak Hill’s presentation is Friday, July 29 at 2:00. H.E.B. : HEBUDDY SUMMER READING PROGRAM:


Grab a pen and fill out the form at HEB. Ready? Set. Read! Just pick out 10 books and get started. After you finish reading each one, log it in the form. Be sure to have a grownup put their initials by each book you’ve read. (Parents, you can read to your children if they are too young.) When you’re done, pat yourself on the back! You’ve read 10 books.
BORDERS’ DOUBLE – DOG DARE SUMMER READING PROGRAM:

Dates:  June 1-September 5, 2011         Ages:  Must be 12 and under.

Requirements:  Go to Double Dog Dare for more form and details.  Print out the form to write down the ten books that your child reads.  You must also check the box and sign to confirm that your child read the books.  Take your completed form to any Borders, Borders Express or Waldenbooks between June 1-September 5, 2011.

Prize:  Your child can choose a book in store from a group of selected titles.

BARNES & NOBLE SUMMER READING IMAGINATION’S DESTINATION:


Read any 8 books this summer and record them the Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Imagination’s Destination Journal along with whom you would recommend each book and why. Take your completed journal to any B&N store by September and choose your FREE reading adventure from the book list featured on back of journal. Visit Barnes & Noble to download the reading journal along with suggested reading lists and other activities

HALF PRICE BOOKS’ FEED YOUR BRAIN SUMMER READING PROGRAM

Record the number of minutes each day you read during June and July. After the child reads at least 600 minutes, turn in the form to any Half Price Book location to get your free $5 in Half Price Books Back to School Bucks to use July 25 - Aug. 31.
